That it can give you those memories to hold onto when you need them most, like when for reasons you’ve never understood your brother takes off and stops talking to your dad altogether, or like when the night after the accident your dad, the best man you know and the person who taught  you right from wrong, is arrested at gunpoint on the street outside your house and accused of the aggravated first degree murder of a cop.”

# Books Queried Before CITY OF SAVAGES: 0. Or maybe 0.5 (my first attempt at a novel was a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age clunker (130K words!) that I embarrassingly sent to an agent friend-of-a-friend. And never heard back…)

Quote from Thesis: “I know I have two options.

I can tell her how much I hate the Park, this city, and her and all of the sorry excuses for human beings that do her bidding.

Or I can tell her the bigger truth.  The one that, regardless of how jealous I am, how insignificant I feel, is more a part of me than any limb or organ, whether I like it or not.  It rumbles inside of me and bursts through my lips, armed with new ammunition from the whiskey.

‘I would never leave Phee,’ I say, but don’t look at my sister, as my answer is so fundamental I’m scared by it. ‘What she wants, I’ll live with.'”

# Books Queried Before BLOOD AND SALT: 0

Quote from Thesis: “The dead girl hung upside down over our kitchen table. Ropes dug into her ankles as she swayed from the chandelier. Blood traced a line from the familiar cut across the palm of her hand to one of her delicate fingertips. The drop quivered a moment before joining the little puddle headed for my twin brother’s cereal bowl. Panicking, I pulled it out of the way; rice milk and granola sloshed onto the table.

‘Ash,’ he yelled at me, mouth full, spoon mid-scoop. ‘I’m not finished with that.’

Ignoring him, I dumped his soggy old-man cereal into the sink. I knew he couldn’t see it, but I couldn’t bear to watch death touch him. The dead girls belonged only to me.”

The moment slips through my black-gloved fingertips. I’m the cartridge in the gun, the scorching round left in the chamber after the trigger fires.

No.

I’m not the hollow shell. I’m the bullet now.”
