“A good writer possesses not only his own spirit but also the spirit of his friends.”
― Friedrich Nietzsche
What happens when a small group of young adult authors debuting in 2015 gets together? Words fly. Friendships form. War stories are shared. And a mission is born.
A mission to give back to the community that inspires us: teens.
We are writers, but first we are readers. We grew up devouring books. We still do. With a flip of a page we can be queens, warriors, wizards. One crack of a spine and we can have our first kiss, first love, first loss. The power of the written word to transport us to another time, another place, another life hooked us as readers and made our dreams come true as writers.
That our first books will be publishing in 2015 drew us together initially, but our passion for sharing our love of books with the community we write about and for is what led us to form the Freshman Fifteens.
Leading up to our debut year, we will be focusing on our core mission of giving back to the YA community by working with teen readers as well as teen writers. These are a few of the ways we hope to connect with this special group of fellow book lovers:
- Mentoring local teen writers
- Holding online writing workshops for teens
- Reaching out to teens readers and writers in detention centers and hospitals
- Incorporating writing workshops and school and library visits on a 2015 Freshman Fifteens book tour
While each of our journeys to publication is unique, a common thread is the support we have received from the generous and welcoming community of KidLit writers. We’re looking forward to helping and cheering on our fellow published and aspiring writers by:
- Sharing tips on writing, querying, getting published, and more
- Interviewing authors, agents, and editors
- Offering critiques
- Hosting giveaways
- Getting to know our fellow writers, readers, and lovers of YA!
Is there something you’d love to see us do? Please let us know!
Oh, and here’s a fun fact: the average hardcover weighs about a pound. With our debut books in 2015, we aim to be the freshman fifteen you don’t mind packing on!
“Never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them.”
